Late Antique Rotunda Church of "St. George"

The Rotunda of St. George is one of Sofia's most valuable historical and architectural landmarks, considered the oldest preserved building in the capital. The church is located in the courtyard of the Presidency, in the heart of ancient Serdica, amidst the ruins of the Roman city. Built in the early 4th century during the reign of Emperor Constantine the Great, the rotunda is a circular, domed building made of red bricks, erected on a square base. Throughout the centuries, it served various functions and was later converted into a Christian church dedicated to St. George the Victorious. The preserved medieval frescoes inside the church are particularly valuable, including depictions from different periods of Bulgarian and Byzantine art. Archaeological remains of ancient Serdica can also be explored near the rotunda. Today, the Rotunda of St. George is an active Orthodox church and a popular tourist attraction, drawing visitors with its unique blend of ancient history, religion, and architecture.
